How can we improve SQL Search?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Visual Studio support

Can it be a Visual Studio plugin also?

These days I find myself opening management studio just for SQL Search. And I found myself just today query sys.tables from Visual Studio instead of opening ssms to use SQL Search.

    • Preview table contents in the bottom pane where SP previews are shown.

The preview pane under the search results is wasted space when searching for tables.

Tables should be previewed like SPs when highlighted in the search results, either the top n rows, or even just a list of columns in the table would be more useful.

      • Search through objects, regardless of coding format

As discussed on Twitter (http://bit.ly/1mPaC1A), it would be great to search through dynamically formatted objects. Let me explain that.

I needed to find all stored procedures that ran updates or inserts on a specific table. But because we don't save stored procedures into any source safe system (TFS, GIT, VSS, SVN, etc), I needed to use
SQLSearch. But because multiple people across multiple teams work on these stored procedures, coding guidelines aren't always followed to the letter.

So in some cases you'll find a query with 4-part naming (LinkedServer.Database.Schema.Table), 3-part naming
        (Database.Schema.Table), 2-part naming (Schema.Table) or only on…

          • Ensure Sequences are supported fully

Sequences can be searched, but cannot be filtered as the type is set to "unknown" so doesn't equate to any of the object types.
Sequence text preview is empty and the select object in Object Explorer doesn't work.

            • Schema filter

It would be nice to be able to filter results on schema. We have a number of large databases with multiple schemas. When we're looking for a common phrase or word, it would be nice to be able to select a schema or multiple schemas to narrow down the results.

              • Add search for SSRS command text.

Typically sql code on the server is in one of 3 places: database objects, sql agent jobs, or ssrs command text. It would be nice if SQL Search could search SSRS command texts.

                • String search

Add a feature that allows the user to search for a string, for example...

if I wanted to search for "updateFolder" then it would show...

                  Database -> TableName -> ColumName -> Value = "\\updateFolder\Progam Files\working\"

That way a user would know where it is and the full string that it is within.

                  • Case sensitive

The databases I support are case sensitive, so it would be very helpful if there was a case sensitive search available.

                    • banner

Remove the banner "ad" at the bottom of the window when other RedGate products installed. I don't need a reminder to "Learn about RedGate essential SQL Server productivity tools for the DBA..." when I already have them installed and am using them

We’re currently working on improvements to SQL Search and have removed the banner for all users in the forthcoming release. We think this will improve people’s overall experience of SQL Search and Red Gate.

                        Thanks for your suggestion.

                      • Enable searching on system objects (system stored procedures, system views, system tables...)

I want the option which searches for system objects (like system stored procedures, system views...). I need this feature quite often and it would be really handsome to have it on sql search, because there are a lot of system objects and searching through them manually takes time.

                        • clr result will not be found in the database tree

SQL search does not navigate to a clr function or stored procedure in the database tree. Would be nice if it would.

                          • Sql Search matches the name AND the text of all objects

When you search for an object name (views, functions, tables...) Sql Search shows the object twice.

If you matched the name and/or column it's OBVIOUS it will match the text.

                            • Color syntax highlighting in SqlSearch result preview

Please make the result preview to look and feel more like a read-only query editor with syntax highlighting, copy/paste, search, etc.

Currently I use SqlSearch to find a stored procedure but then I always have to click on "Select object in Object Explorer" and then display its script to get this kind of behavior.

                                • Support for Umlaut respectively mutated vowel

We use german notation for database objects. For example a table could be named "Übersetzung". So you have the umlaut "Ü" in it. The SQL Search neglect this.
It would be nice if SQL Search would support mutated vowels or minimum give a hint, that this is not supported.
                                  Thanks

After searching we try to copy some text (for example the stored procedure name) in the result panel. This fails with the error: "unsaved documents cannot be cut or copied to the clipboard...." (alert box)

                                    • Coloured 'hotspots' on the scroll bar to show where matching references are

There's already been a suggestion to add next/previous matches, and this doesn't replace that, but helps to show where in the script the next match is (a bit like the difference highlighter on the vertical scroll bar in SQL Compare)

                                      • Search for text in SSIS packages/connection strings/data-flows/T-SQL

We have 60+ active jobs, each with multiple job-steps and multiple data-flows. Any of these can contain T-SQL code such as the following:
                                        SELECT cust.CustId
                                        FROM sql01.datawarehouse.dbo.Customer cust INNER JOIN
                                        sql01.datawarehouse.dbo.tblar_inv_dtl Rev ON cust.CustId = Rev.CustID
                                        WHERE DATEDIFF(DAY, Rev.Dt, GETDATE()) <= 365

I need to be able to root out all of the references to SQL01 before we move to a new server. It would be extremely valuable to us to be able to identify and change all of thes references before we decommission the old SQL01 server - as opposed to just fixing the jobs after they fail.

                                        Thanks!

                                        • To be able to select 2 or more object like Table and Views to search for, not to all or to only 1

My idea is to search for the objects beginning with LPrg, but I want to have in the list only tables, views and SP, not index, tigers and so on.

You combo box offer only All, only Tables, only views and so on, but there no option to select for example Table and Views. If I understand correct, the idea of SQL Search is to reduce time gone for navigation, but with this miss of option I’m lost between tigers, indexes and so on. They are 3 times more in numbers then Tables, views and SP. I need just table, views…
