How can we improve our Oracle tools?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

One of the things that is missing is the ability to compare tablespaces of objects. I know you can do this, but if you turn on storage you also get lots of cruft that you do not want to change. It would be good if this was available as a separate option.

      • Support Table Type Columns

It appears that Schema Compare does not support table types as columns. I have a table that had a type type added to it on dev. I compared it with QA and it correctly detected the difference, however, the migration script did not include the storage clause necessary for deployment. The statement it created is this:

        ALTER TABLE xxproduct.audit_log ADD (audit_value xxproduct.audit_value_tab);

It should have created something along these lines:

        ALTER TABLE xxproduct.audit_log ADD (audit_value xxproduct.audit_value_tab)
NESTED TABLE "AUDIT_VALUE" STORE AS "AUDIT_VALUES"
        (PCTFREE 10 PCTUSED 40 INITRANS 1 MAXTRANS 255 LOGGING
        STORAGE(INITIAL 65536 NEXT 1048576 MINEXTENTS 1 MAXEXTENTS 2147483645
        PCTINCREASE…

          • Multiscript tool - for Oracle

the ability to broadcast releases/upgrades is in the Multiscript tool...but only for SQL. Please implement for Oracle! Potentially hugely beneficial for some real-world cases

            • Command line interactive report

As with Schema compare tool, Data compare Tool should generate an interactive report.

                • Allow Locking feature to work with automatic re-compiles due to PL/SQL invalidation

It would be awesome if the tool would let automatic re-compiles work with Locked objects when a package spec/body is invalidated by a change to another package. As it is now - and automatic re-compile (without a code change) is blocked by the REDGATE.CHECK_LOCKS database trigger.

Could Red Gate be changed to allow automatic re-compiles (as opposed to code change compiles)? Perhaps performing a checksum between the code and the Subversion repository could work (though this would require the database instance to communicate with the repository).

                  Thanks!

                  • Get ALL table attributes

One more feature that we really need, however is for Source Control AND Schema Compare to pick up the following attributes on tables:
                    1) Compression (OLTP, QUERY HIGH, etc.)
                    2) Partitioning Method – along with the columns and at least one default partition (let us choose if we want ALL partitions, or just one default one for migration)
                    3) Tablespace
                    4) PCTFREE
                    5) PARALLEL attribute
                    6) LOGGING attribute

In short – we basically need almost everything that DBMS_METADATA.GET_DDL would return for a table.

We run in Oracle Exadata – and table definition is extremely important to good performance and compression…

                    • bug on context index and xmltype column

Refresh afte commit changes show incorrect changes with context index on xmltype column.

                      For example:
                      create table t1(col xmltype);

                      create index idx_test on t1(col)
                      indextype is ctxsys.context
                      parameters ('datastore ctxsys.default_datastore
                      filter ctxsys.null_filter
                      section group ctxsys.auto_section_group
                      sync (on commit) memory 16m');

                      • Objects included in the results - CommandLine

Filter for object types in command line application (SCO.exe).

There are several cases when to apply only changes for specific object types (i.e. package, procedure, function) instead of all differencies. Such as in GUI.

                        • Streamline the workflow

                          Hi,

I am developing on my local machines and then deploy to my customer's development machines. I am deploying at least 2 to 3 times a day to at least 2 different databases.

Every time I do this I get the OCP selection box, cancel, select the OCP file I need, click on compare, click on the differences I want to deploy, click on deploy, click on next (I always deploy directly to the destination), click on deploy now, click on are you sure.

I'm sure this can be streamlined and simplified. Don't use modal dialog boxes on top of…

                          • Only prompt for save if options have changed

                            Hi,

First, thanks for this tool. It has been a life saver for me.

Secondly, everytime I do a compare it requests to save changes to the ocp file. Everytime I sit there and think about whether I changed anything or not. Most often I haven't.

It would make life easier if it didn't prompt every time.

                            Regards.

                            • Add an ignore option for Schema Compare to skip when errors occur, e.g. Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object is displayed and Schema Compare stops. It would be better if it were possible to continue beyond this error and just have a logfile of errors with details of the objects that failed.

                              • Source Control for Oracle: Option to Resolve All Conflicts

Currently we have to select if each conflict should be resolved using the database or source control version individually. In our environment we always apply changes to the database so it is always the master. Would be very useful for us to be able to say resolve all conflicts using the database copy.

                                • Add the ability to delete items from the result list.

often when I am going through a compare or check in list, I am looking at changes and looking for a set of changes to check in, or a set of changes to make a script for. As I'm going down the list, I would like to just remove matches as I go. Sometimes I want to remove a whole block, then resort by something else then remove another block, so I can quickly narrow results down (and often don't want to create a filter for this, becuase it changes, this is more of a one time thing). Now if…

                                  • Support an LDAP connection, so the server name is not required

Support an LDAP connection, so the server name is not required. We would like to use a server alias only, so that all developers don't have to know or update the server name locally.

                                    • Allow schema comparison from a specific revision of the repository

When your source or destination is an SVN repository allow to select a specific revision of the repository.

It is true that there are workarounds for this but it would save time to do it automatically in the tool because now either you have to checkout or update to an specific revision from the svn or you have to create tags in your repository for each version.

                                      • Option to Ignore Extneral Table Location

When comparing an External Table from one environment to the next, a difference in LOCATION (or filename) that the table refers to triggers a difference. We use External Tables to read data into our warehouse and currently have to manually ignore or remove those location changes from scripts when the difference is discovered. Adding an option to "Ignore External Table Location" would be very convenient for us.

                                        • snapshot

Create snapshot options should be similar to those in the SQL Server tool. We are currently limited to snapshot only from TNS and manual connection. We should have the options to create a snapshot from script file or source control. This is vital to our build automation
