How can we improve our Oracle solution?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. TFS client not found

    I'm getting an error that TFS client not found. I don't see any documentation as to what the RedGate software is expecting to see as a "TFS client". Please advise.

    An alternative to needing Visual Studio installed is to use Team Explorer or Team Explorer Everywhere

  3. SID is limited to 8 characters

    The SID for my oracle instance is 10 characters. The connection wizard only allows 8 characters so can't use the product.

  4. Allow us to choose the schema prefix

    We noticed that all objects have a prefix in front of it.
    The prefix happens to be the same as your folder name. I would prefer it if it was the same as the schema name, or NULL. Preferably give us the right to choose a prefix name.

    I believe you can do this in the latest version of Source Control.

    Either you can make your schema name the same as the folder when you setup your project.

    Or you can now access the options via right-click on the project on the projects page and select “Edit comparison options…” and use the option “Exclude schema names”

  5. Data should be a part of the version control for metatables

    Some tables are metatables involving data/information connected to the software releases. The Source Control utility should have a possibility of setting a switch on the tables, turning data compare on. This way you could include data for these tables in the version control.

  7. Match source when creating repository files.

    When checking in a new package from the database, the schema name in references throughout the package is changed to have double quotes around it. Then when a change is made on the file, the entries from the database without the double quotes do not match the entries from source control with the double quotes. It seems that this difference alone isn't enough to show the comparison as different, but when another difference exists, these entries are all flagged as different. To resolve this, the double quotes should not be created in the first place.

    Thanks Leigh. We believe this is fixed in the latest beta release, please do advise.

  8. Put package header and body in seperate files.

    When a repository is created from the database, both the package header and the package body are placed in a single file. It would be more usable if the spec and body were in separate files in the same folder with a .pks or .pkb extension respectively.

  9. Compare tables with different tablenames

    Could you please make it possible to compare tables with different tablenames?

    This should be applied to all tools.

    I do believe this is possible in the SQL Server-tools.

  10. Allow partial compare of schemas based on naming convention

    We manage ERP systems with larg schemas (150.000 - 200.000 objects) where only a small proportion - the custom objects - should be under source control / schema compared.

    To enable a decent use of Schema Compare for these systems, we would need to be able to compare schemas partially based on naming convention. Multiple assignments per schema should be possible, e.g. we want to match all objects for schema ABC matching the naming convention EE% and FF%

  11. dotNet version

    System requirements for Schema Compare tell us about "Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or later." Actually, the last version requires .NET version 4. The previous build required version 3.5 exactly. Such mess in versions frustrated me.

    Many thanks for reporting this Sergey, we have now updated that page. We are using some features in .NET 4 for the latest version, apologies for the frustration, we won’t be updating again for a long time now.

  12. Include materialized views in the schema compare

    It seems materialized views are not included in the compare. Or am I missing something?

    Hi Bjorn – many thanks for your feedback. We had noticed this, and a similar issue with the ordering of TNS names, in our own testing recently. Both issues are fixed in Schema Compare for Oracle V3 which we’re expecting to release commercially in a couple of weeks. The major new functionality in this version is the ability to compare and deploy your schema to a scripts folder, which you can then put under source control. If you’d like to try V3 before then, you can download it by signing up to the Source Control for Oracle beta program on the Red Gate website.

  15. Problem with schema compare 3

    With large Oracle schemas it appears to hang at 44% with idle connections to the databases it is comparing.

    We think this should be fixed in the latest version of Schema Compare for Oracle which you can get by using the “Help→Check for updates” menu option in the tool.

  16. Source Control Option - Generate object scripts in schema sub-folders

    Source Control Option

    When comparing multiple schemas all objects of same type go into one folder (e.g. all tables from all schemas into tables folder). In Oracle you normally look at objects by schema then type rather than this other way round.

    Please provide option (and set as default) to export into schema sub-folders then object type folders

    This is now implemented in version 3.0.0.196 which you can get via the Help menu in the tool (Help→Check for Updates).

    In this version multiple schemas are written to multiple sub-folders by default (the user just selects the parent folder) – we’ll look at adding a user-defined option to override this behaviour in a future release.

  17. TNSNames list sorted?

    On New Project list, can the TNSNames list (to connect to the db) be sorted alphabetically? Just makes it easier to browse.

    Update: v3 of Schema Compare has been released which includes this feature.

    Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve implemented this change for you on our early access branch and it will be included in the full product once the EA is complete. In the meantime you can get the EA from:
    http://downloads.red-gate.com/EAP/SchemaCompareforOracleBeta/SchemaCompareforOracleBeta.exe
    (this will install alongside any version you currently have installed if you want to give it a go)

  18. Data Compare for Oracle: Option: Comparisaon behavior - Trim Trailing Spaces: Is it possible to uncheck by default this option?

    When I used this tool, I want that, by default, he copies over all data exactly the same as they exist in the source; so including trailing spaces.

    In my opinion you set/change an option if you want that your data should be 'transformed' during the transfer form source to target. At that moment, it is a conscious choice.
