I learned how to turn it off after much trial and error, mostly looking at what options I had inadvertantly set in SSMS, specifically looking at how AutoRecovery could be causing the problem of discarded queries being reopened. Personally, I close SSMS to discard all those one off little queries from all over the enterprise that tend to be created. If the file is worth opening again; it gets properly saved.
